The Tri-Institutional Programs in Chemical Biology (TPCB) and Computational Biology & Medicine (CBM) are part of the Tri-Institutional Research Program, which was jointly developed by three major research and educational institutions, Cornell University-Ithaca (CU-I) and its NYC Weill Medical College (WMC), Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and The Rockefeller University (RU).

The leadership of these institutions recognizes that the recent advances in the biological sciences, such as the sequencing of the human genome has ushered in a new era of discovery in biology and medicine that will lead to unprecedented opportunities to improve the health and quality of life for individuals worldwide. Understanding the significance of new discoveries will require the use of sophisticated computer modeling technology and a deep understanding of chemistry and protein structure, and how such structures are integrated into whole systems. These challenges can only be met by the training of a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists comfortable working at the interface of the physical and computational sciences and biomedical research.
